Japanese Laurel



  • Glossy leaves which bears handsome glossy foliage generously splashed with yellow.

  • Red berries appear come Autumn if pollinated by a nearby male variety.

  • Medium sized to large hardy evergreen shrub.

  • Thrives in most soils in sun, partial or deep shade. Tolerant of poor dry soil once established but objects to cold winter winds and frost pockets.

  • Their flowering time is Spring but they’re season of interest is Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter.

  • Produces purple flowers.

Aucuba Japonica ‘Variegata’ also known as variegated Japanese laurel are evergreen shrubs with simple guaranteed, leathery leaves, attractively variegated in many cultivars and have small purple flowers followed on female plants by large glossy red fruit. These plants are from Japan.


Growing tips


  • Will grow well in all but waterlogged soils.

  • Propagate by seed or from semi-hardwood cuttings.

  • Suggested planting locations are flower borders and beds, Architectural Cottage & Informal Garden.

  • For shrubs and trees late winter to early spring is the best time to plant them.

  • Extremely tolerant of shade and dry conditions.
