This slow growing cactus from Mexico goes by many names. The Echinocactus, comically coined the Mother in Law’s Cushion, it’s formed by a barrel shaped stem which protrudes deep yellow protective spines. Like most cacti they're drought tolerant and need very little care and attention to grow well. Not enough sunlight and over-watering are common mistakes. Best placed in a conservatory or patio bay, the plant is hardy and can survive most weather conditions. Although temperamental, they can grow bell shaped yellow flowers in the right conditions, which adds a vivid contrast to the fierce looking cacti. Very prominent the Echinocactus makes a striking addition to any home or garden, or maybe even the exotic gift you’ve been searching for, for your Mother in Law.
